The information on the following two pages is taken from pages 202 and
203 of the Sierra Bullets Reloading Manual, second edition, copyright 1978.
"The 7.62x39mm cartridge was designed in 1943 in the Soviet Union and
is now their standard service rifle cartridge, as well as for most of the
communist bloc countries and some others. It is sometimes called the
`world's most popular cartridge' because well over one billion weapons have
been produced for it. Its popularity in this country is directly related
to the many Russian SKS semiautomatic rifles brought back to the U.S. by
our servicemen returning from Viet Nam. Lake City Arsenal at one time
produced boxer primed ammunition for use in captured SKS and AK-47 rifles
in Viet Nam.
"Most SKS rifles have grooves diameters of .311" to .313". Our test
rifle, a new Sako Vixen L461 Sporter, has a groove diameter of .312".
Sierra's 110 and 125 grain .308 bullets at higher velocities showed better
accuracy than the Sako factory ammo. Our 150 grain .311 bullet produced
groups less than one minute of angle in the Sako rifle.
"While the 7.62x39mm is not a big game cartridge, availability of
boxer primed Sako brass and a good selection of bullets make it a good
small game and plinking round."
